Weekly Photo Challenge: Unusual

Location: Ginza Six

Do you happen to know Yayoi Kusama? She is a Japanese artist and writer. She has a thematic interest in psychedelic colors, repetition, and pattern according to what I have read and seen. Above is a peculiar work of hers. I was in Ginza Six, an upscale mall in Ginza, when I saw these hanging pumpkins. I’m not even sure if these are pumpkins. But they look like one. What do you think? Anyhow, they captured my attention as well with the others due to the captivating colors. There’s just something in her art. No matter what it is, one thing is for sure, it sends forth cheer to me. I was in Roppongi when I first saw her unusual work of art. After that instance, her art was etched in my memory. Hence, I figured it’s her work when I saw these at Ginza Six. Unusual, isn’t it? Unusual in a good way. It was amazing!

Just so you know, I wondered who is the artist behind the pieces of artwork in that shop located in Roppongi Hills, so I asked my student who was with me that time. He said she is a famous artist in Japan and her works are expensive. I was curious about the artist so my student showed me a magazine with her on the cover. And I was surprised! I thought she’s in her early 20s based on her artwork but when I saw her photo, she seemed to be in her 50s and she created such things of vibrant colors! It only means one thing for me. You’re never too old for anything like Disney. No matter how old we are, we still have the so called ‘young at heart’. I hope you get my point.

Hats off to Kusama san!👑
